On, Thursday, August 21st, 2014, I went to speak with Spring City’s City Council to request a ” A Day of Remembrance for Orson Hyde” on or near his birthday, January 8th, perhaps the 2nd Saturday or Sunday of January. The City Council listened to some of Orson Hyde’s accomplishments after he was directed to come to Sanpete county as its stake president in 1860. Elder Hyde established peace during the Indian wars and taught local farmer’s how to plant. He strengthened and chastised the settlers of Sanpete county with his fiery speeches. He traveled extensively throughout the area giving advice and bringing order to the settlements . Orson Hyde’s beautiful home and grave-site are located in Spring City.
What would we want to have happen on that 2nd weekend of January? The #1 goal of this commemoration would be: unity, to welcome and include everyone in town.
Ideas could include: a town potluck with square dance, a film festival, photography, a fireside with an actor portraying Elder Hyde reciting parts from his speeches
A friend suggested hosting a play writing contest and performing a play about Orson Hyde in Victory Hall.
What are your ideas?
